A very happy new year to you!
We started 2024 with a trip to the Cambridgeshire village of Barrington for their new year’s day classic car meeting. Gathered on the green we found a wonderful array of vehicles, all bathed in golden winter sun.
To match the subject matter, I decided to go retro with my equipment today, using my 35 year old Canon 50mm f1.8 lens. I bought this way back in 2008 for the princely sum of £59 and for a long while it was my favourite lens, making me realise the benefits of shooting with a prime lens, even if the focusing mechanism does sound like an angry bumblebee! When I stopped using Canon cameras it fell out of use but a couple of months ago I happened upon a secondhand Metabones adapter which would allow me to use it on my Panasonic cameras with autofocus and the ability to change the aperture.
Even with the adapter, focusing is a rather hit and miss affair (especially with sparkly subjects like cars) but I love the look this old lens offers and once again it’s going to be become a more frequent part of my lens arsenal.
As today was the first day of my new 365 project, where I try to look at the world in a more creative way, I spent the time looking for interesting juxtapositions and beautiful light, picking out smaller areas of the cars rather than whole vehicles. The resulting collection of photos is rather eclectic, but perhaps none the worse for that.
This is the image I selected for my 365 project, which you can follow here or over on Instagram at @in.the.moment365.
