Last May I had a musical week, starting with a Parnassian Ensemble concert in Bosham Church, followed by a recorder course at Cannington Court in Somerset. I took my pinhole camera along for the ride, capturing the some of the scenes around me and I decided to use it to recorder some music making in action.
My first photo, above, was taken during our afternoon rehearsal and, although our music stands and the harpsichord are clearly visible you can only see the barest hint of us musicians. I found suitable vantage point for the concert too, tucking my camera into the pulpit and from there I captured the whole of the hour long concert. In this image we’re even more ghostly, and the eerie feel is only enhanced by a good dose of sun flare from the windows opposite too.
During my recorder course at Cannington Court I placed my camera on the stage behind me as I conducted the group while we played Steve Narshall’s Festival Fantasy. Nineteen minutes later we had our photo. Here the musicians are much clearer, largely because they were sitting fairly still, but I’ve been reduced to the vaguest of blurs as I conducted!
