I’ve always enjoyed street photography, but in recent years I’ve rather lost my nerve, so it’s been a genre I’ve not pursued for a while. Last month an opportunity came up for me to see one of my heroes, Joel Meyerowitz talk at UCL in London, so this gave me an excuse to take to the streets beforehand.
I find I often work best when I have a theme or mini-project in mind, so on this occasion I decided to look for photographs which ask questions, leaving the viewer wondering. Whether I entirely succeeded is debatable, but I feel all four of these scenes ask questions about the people in them, either because of their interaction or their actions.
What’s on the end of the strap? A giant balloon, perhaps?!
One man and his dog. I felt this image posed more questions with a mere glimpse of the owner - as I took it I couldn’t help wonder why the dog’s attention was focused elsewhere.
My day finished at UCL and Joel Meyerowitz being interviewed by John Wilson. I’ve long admired his photography (which covers street, landscape, still life and his iconic documentation of Ground Zero in the months after 9/11) and as he’s now 88 I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to hear him talk in person. Rather than lurking backstage before the talk began, he came out and chatted to the 500+ strong audience.
Discussing some of his most famous images.
