Way back last December I enjoyed a day in London, travelling with just my pinhole camera. I started off at the Natural History Museum to see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. There wasn’t much wildlife for me to photograph while I was at there, but plenty of interesting architectural lines and movement among my fellow visitors to the museum. Around the Darwin statue on the stairs I saw a steady stream of tourists, lining Up to take selfies, although you can barely see them in the finished image above.
Later in the day, I found myself on the platform at Baker Street station, waiting for a delayed Circle Line train. I figured I may make use of this otherwise dead time and set up my camera on the platform to photograph the station’s iconic architecture. Unfortunately, two Japanese tourists also chose the same moment to mill around in front of my camera taking photos of each other. Not quite the image I had in mind, but it was interesting to see how their movement appeared in my long exposure photograph.
When it became clear that no train was going to come to my platform any time soon, I wandered around the corner onto the Metropolitan Line platform. Here, I found a handy bench on which to place my camera and waited patiently for the train to pull away before opening the shutter on my camera. Its movement created some lovely light trails in the finished image, so it turned out to be a good use of an otherwise irritating delay to my journey.
